Earlier a magazine reported Bobby Au Yeung first quickly left his ex-wife, then married a new love interest, who is his current rich wife. Yesterday Bobby did an interview with Metro radio and was displeased by the fabricated news. He was also wondering how the magazine was able to find his marriage certificate from the past. Bobby said: “In 1993, I divorced my ex-wife, and then married my current wife in 1995. The report about me ditching my ex-wife is completely untrue.” Bobby said frankly he does not keep in touch with his ex-wife, but the report wasn’t defaming or anything because he really has divorced before. Bobby said he will just treat it as promotion. Bobby expressed he didn’t receive a call or SMS from Ricky Wong. TVB also didn’t meet with him to discuss contract renewal. As for the rumors that he’s one of the top picks for TV King this year, but because he’s not a contract artist, are the chances slim? Bobby said: “Raymond Lam can do TV, music and movies, and Wayne Lai also won TV King before. There is no relation to being a contracted artist or not.”

Yesterday the Taiwanese media reported 35 year old Gigi Leung will be holding her wedding on October 3rd at the small island of Eivissa (Ibiza) in Spain. Gigi’s wedding is very low-profile, as she only invited a small group of close friends from the industry including best friends Charlie Yeung, Angelica Lee and Valen Hsu. According to the reports, Gigi’s other half is a Spanish man and she met him by chance while she was on her Spain trip earlier this year in March. Reporters contacted Gigi and her manager to confirm. Gigi replied through SMS confirming her marriage. She revealed in a short message that she will soon be a bride and that she’s marrying her Spanish boyfriend. She sweetly praised her fiance: “He is wonderful. (Do we have to congratulate you?) TVB actor Ron Ng was previously reported to be dating 24-year-old Chinese actress Zhang Xinyu.

Ron was spotted picking up the actress at the airport and had also scolded his fans when they verbally attacked his girlfriend online, indirectly confirming that the couple was seeing each other.

However, earlier this month, Xinyu reportedly two-timed Ron with Hong Kong actor Alex Fong.

The actress is currently shooting her new drama in Beijing and could not meet up with Ron regularly.

She lamented on her microblog that she had to wait for someone to say 'good night' to her every night before she goes to bed. The actress added, "Perhaps one day, I might not have to wait for that "Good night" anymore", as if giving her boyfriend an ultimatum.

Xinyu was also spotted getting cosy with Alex during filming and had even met up with the actor secretly.

Last week, the pair met at a coffee house, where a couple of friends joined them. The pair sat side by side, looking much like a couple. Alex took good care of the actress and frequently whispered into her ear.

It was said that Ron, who completed his filming on Wednesday, rushed to Beijing the next day, after hearing about the gossip. He went straight to Xinyu's house.

The actress, who was then secretly meeting Alex at a place nearby, rushed home immediately, when she learned of her beau's sudden arrival.

Photos of the two Hong Kong TVB actors sharing a loving moment in their three-month old apartment recently surfaced.

he onscreen couple from TVB drama War of The Heart has taken their onscreen relationship one step further with a real-life romance brewing between the duo.

When Moses Chan and Aimee Chan were quizzed about their blossoming romance at different promotional events, the pair often smiled and gave non-committal replies.

Despite their no-comment stance, the duo's relationship is a widely-acknowledged "open secret" even at the TV station. Moses was even suspected to have spent a night at Aimee's place and sparked off rumours that they are co-habiting.

According to sources, the former Miss Hong Kong was on the lookout for a suitable house in May this year before she finally settled on a New Territories apartment in June. The Hong Kong media reported that the pair shared the workload between themselves with Aimee responsible for house hunting and Moses in-charge of the monthlyHK$22,000 (S$3,445) rental.

A couple of days ago, photos of the lovey-dovey pair in their new apartment surfaced. Decked in matching t-shirts, the couple clearly enjoyed their time together and Aimee was seen feeding Moses a vitamin pill. Their endearing actions continued into dinnertime as they sat opposite one another and fed each other spoonfuls of rice.

After dinner, Moses was in charge of washing the dishes while Aimee relaxed in the living room. After washing the dishes, Aimee gave Moses a hug, as if rewarding him for his hard work.

When rumours of the duo's budding romance started circulating, one of TVB's high-level executive Virginia Lok gently hinted at her approval of their relationship. She expressed, "After reading the reports, I found nothing wrong with it. A couple will not only feed each other at home, they will also do it when they are outside."

"Moses and Aimee are very compatible. I really hope for their relationship to blossom," she added.

Wong Hei (王喜) worked at TVB for 16 years and suffered from cold treatment in recent years. Eventually, he decided to leave the company due to dissatisfaction. On September 29th, Wong Hei’s TVB contract officially expired and he left with mixed feelings.

Although Wong Hei was good friends with TVB executive, Stephen Chan (陳志雲), Wong Hei was not promoted at the compnay. In fact, the Artist Management department suggested that Wong Hei pay money to terminate his contract early. The turn of events made Wong Hei disheartened. Before leaving, Wong Hei returned to his locker at TVB City to obtain a few items and take pictures. He had mixed feelings and did not expect to be faced with further unsympathetic treatment by the staff, who had terminated his employee ID card access rights to the premises in advance.

Wong Hei worked at TVB for many years, delivering numerous classic performances in highly rated series, including the three installments of Burning Flame "烈火雄心". However, his workload plummeted in recent years. Rumors suggested that he did not get along with TVB executive, Virginia Lok (樂易玲). Accused of not delivering enough [vendor] show appearances, Wong Hei was advised by the Artist Management department to terminate his contract early by paying a fee. This cold treatment gave Wong Hei a great sense of helplessness and made him highly uncomfortable.

Difficult to Say Goodbye to Producer Amy Wong

Last night, Wong Hei packed his possessions from his personal locker, #181, and to say goodbye to the people he cherished. On his blog, Wong Hei posted photos and expressed the mixed feelings he felt on his last day at TVB.

With his 16-year career at TVB, Wong Hei had the most difficulty in bidding farewell to Producer Amy Wong (王心慰). Last night, Wong Hei stopped by Amy’s office to reminsce over past memories, which made him feel emotional and started crying. ”This is the mother of ‘Yau Chi Tak,’ ‘Lok Tin Yau,’ ‘Kei Tak Tin,’ and ‘Chung Yau Sing.’ Over the last 16 years, Amy Wong was the producer who trusted me the most. She allowed me to inject blood, tears, and soul into the characters which she created. For each role, I asked her: ‘Did I portray the role as you imagined it to be?’ Each time, she will look at me steadily before saying: “Sometimes you did and sometimes you did not. You can do better, but let’s drop the matter.’

“Ha ha, this evening, I deliberately entered Amy’s office after work hours to secretly take pictures for memories’ sake. My intention was that I did not want to cry in front of Amy. Unfortunately, my tears are currently falling while I am typing these words right now.”

Employee Access Canceled Prior to 12 Midnight

As TVB’s former “biological son,” Wong Hei recollected upon some old photos [that were posted in TVB's offices], “This photo was taken in 2006, after I signed a management contract to become a ‘biological son.’ The Artist Management department designed my image. At the time, I had quit smoking and thus my face was plump ha ha, but unfortunately it did not produce a ‘cute’ effect which made everyone love me. Ha ha, all along, I felt that this wall, which is filled with artist head shots, reaked of an ash smell. Do you share the same feeling?”

Before leaving TVB City, Wong Hei wanted to take a photo with the company’s mascot, TV Buddy, but he discovered his employee ID card was denied access. “When I wanted to go past the main gates and outside the door to take pictures with TV Buddy, my employee ID card was denied access. I only had access to the parking area, while entry to other locations were canceled. One of the security guards said surprisingly, ‘Although it was not yet 12 midnight, the access has been canceled already? Isn’t that too cold?’ I asked, “Can you open the gate and let me take a picture before leaving? I will leave from the parking lot afterwards.’ He said, ’Sure.’”

Future Path to Be Announced

Wong Hei’s final words to TVB were: “Thanks to TVB for giving me challenging and life-risking opportunities over the last 16 years. Hopefully, from now onwards, everyone’s futures will only grow better and better. Bye bye lah!”

Although TVB was not the place for him, Wong Hei will find the proper place for him. Recently, Wong Hei was contacted by Now TV executive, Ho Lai Chuen (何麗全) to discuss program hosting opportunities. Asked about his future direction, Wong Hei indicated that he was currently negotiating with other producers and will reveal his career plans later.

Clarified That He Did Not Tamper With Scripts

Appearing on an interview program with mainland’s Phoenix TV, Wong Hei admitted that he was a little “naive” and was willing to bear the work environment at TVB for 16 years because he wanted to repay the company. “Prior to entering TVB, I was unemployed for 9 months. Precisely at this time, TVB called me.” For many years, Wong Hei was accused of tampering with television scripts and plagued by negative rumors. Through different platforms, he hoped that audiences realized he was not this type of person.

Recently, Wong Hei also discovered that many people treated him very well, such as offering him work and worrying about his future without a job. Upon saying this, Wong Hei’s voice choked and he started wiping away tears.

The other night after Catherine Chau completed the recording of TVB show What The Face, she discovered her handbag disappeared from the makeup room. Her wallet, ID, credit cards, notebook and keys were gone. Catherine called the police immediately and later complained on Weibo. Charmaine Sheh, Ada Choi and many other artists denounced how savage the thief was.

Catherine placed her handbag by the doorway near the makeup room, and when she came back from recording in the studio, the handbag was gone. TVB security personnel looked back at the footage from the security cameras, but the area where the handbag was placed was a blind spot. So the cameras were unable to capture who the thief was. She said her wallet didn't have much cash in it, but it is her lost ID that is the most troubling. She looked through all the trash bins near by, hoping to get her ID and notebook back. However, she had no luck. Later, she called the Tseung Kwan O police and pass the case on for them to handle. Because most of the main hallways in TVB does have security cameras, it is believed there will be evidence. She blamed herself for not being more attentive to her personal belongings and always thought the makeup room was really safe. This time she learned a huge lesson.

When Louisa So spoke of the TVB poaching crisis, she said this allowed her to see the many opportunities out there. Actually she still has over a year left in her contract with TVB, but last week she already received a call from TVB to discuss the contract renewal early and asked her for opinions on the staff. She was startled by this: "The outside hardships just floats around, but I feel it's a good thing. This proves that TVB is starting to place value on us. Giving us the appropriate price is the basis to stabilizing our hearts. TVB finally understand they have to face reality, they ought to give more sincerity and take more practical actions. It is only then that we will become TVB's so-called assets. Actually I was already very pleased by the raise I got last time, but this cannot compare to the offers outside." It was rumored Ricky Wong was willing to compensate for artists if they go over to his company. Louisa said: "There are a lot of choices outside, if a sum of money can light up my eyes, I'll be willing to leave even if I had to pay for the losses."

Fala Chen and Roger Kwok were shooting in TVB City for new series Schemes of East and West. When speaking of the recent poaching crisis, the two expressed they have received the SMS too. Roger received a phone call from Ricky Wong's secretary: "I already declined. I want to focus on my work, if there is an opportunity we can discuss again!" TVB executive Virgina Lok expressed she will give pay raises, Roger expressed in excitement that he supports the idea: "When will it be my turn? In fact, I just recently signed a per-series contract, one series a year. So what if they give double the pay? The most important is to have more people watch the series, I still choose TVB."

It was rumored Fala Chen was one of the 10 stars Ricky Wong wants to target. She expressed she received a call from an unknown caller, but temporarily does not plan to leave TVB: "Everyone gets the SMS, is that no face? However, I still have a long contract, haven't though of leaving." Asked if she doesn't get TV Queen, will she go over? She did not respond directly, just said she hasn't thought about awards.

As to the frequent 'change of parties' rumor, sometimes she's with Virgina Lok and other times she's with Catherine Tsang, Fala made a clever response, expressing that they are all her bosses.

TVB Chairman Sir Run Run Shaw and Vice-Chairperson and Board Member Manager Mona Fong attended the 2011 Sir Run Run Shaw Awards Ceremony last night. The two appeared hand-in-hand, as loving as ever. However, the group of TVB executives like Stephen Chan and Mark Lee did not appear, seems like they purposely went into hiding due to the recent turbulence. A reporter asked Mona if she was worried about the poaching crisis, she just answered: "Thank you" and maintained a smile.

It was said that Mona only appeared so calm and pleased completely because TVB first line Siu Sang and Fadans like Moses Chan, Wayne Lai, Sheren Tang and Jessica Hsuan were met by long contracts, thus making it hard for them to leave. Also after the 'poaching crisis' started, the executives unexpectedly joined forces to counteract the 'enemy'. Mona Fong felt extremely pleased to see this happen.

According to a news source, TVB is also actively promoting the second level group of artists to take the flag. The five targeted Siu Sang and FaDans includes: Fala Chen, Myolie Wu, Kate Tsui, Linda Chung, Aimee Chan, Kenneth Ma, Ron Ng, Ruco Chan, Evergreen Mak and Raymond Wong. It was said the group will be taking part in the 2012 TVB grand productions including: War and Beauty 2, The Prominent Family, The Great Eunuch, Empress Lu, The King Makers, 36 Hours On Call and Triumph in the Skies II. TVB is clearly paving the backup route in case the first line Siu Sang and FaDans decide to leave the company. TVB will be holding their 2012 Sales Presentation in November as a cannon to 'fight the war'. For the first time, TVB will send out the two Production Directors Catherine Tsang and Tommy Leung to monitor the promotional clip shootings in order to ensure high quality clips could be used to fight Ricky Wong.

Last night, Carol Cheng (Dodo) served as the MC at the awards ceremony, although she did received the poaching call, Dodo expressed she definitely will not leave TVB: "I have been with TVB for 30 years already. I am treated well here, lots of series and hosting opportunities were given to me. There were many things I didn't want to do, and I didn't have to. The degree of freedom at TVB is high, I had a pleasant collaboration with them. TVB is like my second home. (Did you respond to Ricky Wong?) I won't, it is great here. I will definitely not think about other TV stations." She also urged the other artists to be of one mind: "You signed a contract, TVB will only promote you if they know your heart is with them."

TVB artists Yoyo Chen and Vincent Wong have been together for some time now and are one of the known couples in the industry. Although Yoyo was asked when she's getting married, she said frankly no one has proposed to her yet. However, it turns out Vincent Wong is secretly planning the wedding at the Hong Kong Shangri-La Hotel and hopes to give his girlfriend a surprise. Yesterday reporters contacted Vincent to ask him about the wedding, he was shocked: "Huh! How do you know? I do have such planning, but I haven't officially proposed to her (Yoyo) yet. Before I hinted several times I wanted to get married, but she seemed to have still been thinking. You can say I'm in the middle of proposing now."

It was rumored the two are looking at homes to start their own little family. Vincent said: "Just looking! I am moving, but not buying. Before we got photographed, so we have to move! The new place is spacious and suitable for marriage." Later, reporters contacted Yoyo. She stuttered in her words: "Actually I don't know yet. He has been saying it all along, but of course I hope he'll do a formal proposal, and not just saying it. He hasn't taken full action yet. (Didn't get a ring and flowers yet?) Not yet! See if his proposal is to my likings first! But sometimes he does give me surprises!"

Flora Chan was once a TVB first line FaDan, but recently she switched over to the Mainland market. She is currently in Beijing shooting for a new series Mother In Law is Coming (丈母娘來了). The recent poaching crisis has left TVB scrambling to convince their artists to stay and bring back more talents. Flora admitted TVB recently invited her back to sign a long contract, but she didn't want to be restricted, so she declined the offer. Even if there is money, she rather have her freedom and focus on her family. Flora said: "If my schedule allows, I will consider shooting another TVB series."

Flora expressed she turned down several TVB series in the past because most of the roles required her to cry and weep, which greatly separates her from reality. For example, she turned down Born Rich before because the role went through too many ups and downs, perhaps she had to do rape scenes or fail in her career. Flora is no longer interested in these types of roles.

It was rumored that Flora was the financial support for her entire family after marriage. She said: "The rumor is false. I don't want to say too much. I just feel very happy now and I'm just out working now purely for my own interest." Asked if she's as powerful as in the series when with her husband at home? Flora laughed: "I have my own opinions, but I will also be a virtuous wife."

It was revealed yesterday that City Telecom’s Ricky Wong has a ‘new tactic’ in his poaching mission. In addition to using the ‘silver bullet’ [money] approach to attract artists to join his company, he is also using the ‘freedom’ approach – if TVB is interested in inviting any of the artists contracted to his company to participate in their series, the artists are free to choose whether they want to participate in the series or not. Asked about this ‘tactic’, Ricky Wong admitted it without hesitation: “Even right now, there are artists under my company’s management who are preparing to film series for TVB. In order for this industry to continue to develop in a healthy way, it’s necessary to give the artists freedom and space to develop.”

When TVB’s deputy director of external affairs Tsang Sing Ming heard about this ‘tactic’ from the mouth of the reporter, he appeared to ‘mock’ Ricky Wong’s action by saying: “TVB is a very responsible publicly-traded company, we fulfill our responsibility to society and respect the spirit of the contract. If someone already signed with another company, TVB will not try to take them away.”

In addition, it was reported yesterday that the chances of TVB fadan Charmaine Sheh joining City Telecom are extremely high, primarily because the company that is involved with the Mainland series that Charmaine is currently filming, "The Legend of the Empire Founder", has many collaborations with Ricky Wong and could serve as an intermediary for the 2 parties. Asked whether Charmaine Sheh has already joined City Telecom, Ricky Wong would only respond: “No comment.”

Also, it was said that Ricky Wong met with Yuen Wah and Teresa Mo the day before yesterday. Yuen Wah admitted that he had met with Ricky Wong, however they only discussed some preliminary criteria regarding salary. Currently filming a Mainland series, Yuen Wah stated that even though Ricky Wong offered a price that was higher than TVB, it can’t compare to the price he receives filming in the Mainland, therefore, he still needs to think about it. When Teresa Mo was asked about her meeting with Ricky Wong, she said that she will only respond about whether she actually met with him or not if there’s picture evidence that she did. Asked whether she would consider joining if Ricky Wong really did meet with her, Teresa expressed that it would depend on whether the timing was right.

LIFE's actors Lau Ching Wan, Myolie Wu Hung Yi and others appeared. Ching Wan said that he saw the film for the first time at the Venice Film Festival and realized that director Johnnie To Kei Fung's production style this time was completely different from before. The entire film had no gun or action but a lot of dialogue. The content was all about life in Hong Kong, which he thought was very special.

The recent show business hot topic was more free television station would appear soon, which made the elite on and off screen the poaching target. Ching Wan said that as an actor he thought it was a good thing so not everyone was limited to work at TVB, ATV or Mainland television. Was his wife Amy Kwok Oi Ming a target? He said, "She has always had Mainland offers, only she decided not to work. (Did she mind the intimate scenes?) Nothing I can do, she chose that. We have an understanding. No matter what role we have we have to do our best, we can't drag our feet."

Wu Hung Yi admitted that she was a target. She was surprised to receive a personal offer call but only chatted a little. She still had several years left on her TVB contract so she did not talk too in depth. As for outside rumors of paying for earlier contract termination, she said without hesitation. "Ultimately the company raised me, I have to remember where I came from." She also said that TVB executive Elaine Lok Yi Ling did not talk to her perhaps because she knew that she was loyal to the company.

Even if a lot of TVB off screen talent left, Hung Yi was still confident in the company. "The company has already made adjustments in comparison. Many people have decided to stay." As for the multiple level salary jump like Kevin Cheng Ka Wing's rumored 160,000 per episode, Hung Yi joked that at work she would ask him to "treat" and admitted, "Mainland work can't be compared, but I would miss home in Hong Kong. I can't just look at money. (would you miss boyfriend Bosco Wong Chung Chak?) No. (He said no one approached him, would you make the decision as a couple?) No."

Raymond Lam, Kate Tsui and Bosco Wong attended separate events and was asked about the TVB poaching crisis. The three of them were very loyal to Virgina Lok. Raymond said as long as Virgina Lok is still with TVB, he will not leave. He said: "TVB treats all their artists well, no bias. (You get 150,000 per episode when shooting in Mainland?) Not quiet, 150,000 was the past. (Do you hope to get a pay raise?) TVB and I do not talk about the money." As for Kate, she said she has received the poaching SMS, but she did not pay attention to it because she was taught to be grateful for her blessings: "TVB treats me well, Miss Lok is very important to me. At this stage, I will not consider leaving. I have confidence in TVB."

Also, Bosco also did not pay attention to the SMS. He reassured Virgina that he will stick with Virgina no matter what, just like Raymond, because Virgina raised him. He will not leave TVB.

Recently known as the 'Telecom Devil', City Telecom Chairman Ricky Wong has been poaching many TVB scriptwriters for higher salaries. Yesterday the Devil strikes again, sending out 'poaching SMS' to nearly 100 TVB artists and behind-the-scenes staff!

It was said, Ricky has already locked his targets on three TVB FaDan and Siu Sangs including Bowie Lam, Steven Ma, Kevin Cheng, Tavia Yeung, Myolie Wu and Bernice Liu. Ricky plans to increase his poaching efforts on his targets. Even Joe Ma, who Virgina Lok is currently trying hard to pull back is part of the 'purchase' line up.

The 'poaching SMS' madly circulated in TVB yesterday, many Siu Sangs and FaDans admitted that they received the SMS including Moses Chan, Bosco Wong, Myolie Wu, Tavia Yeung, Linda Chung and Samantha Ko. Among them, Tavia was feeling an itch! During a radio interview with Eileen Cha, she expressed her eyes opens when she sees money: "A phone call, just treat it as meeting a new friend. I go towards the money, it is tempting. (Were the prices discussed?) I don't know, whatever price I think of, I say it!" However, Tavia clarifies she still has several years in her contract with TVB: "After all, I did start out in the TVB acting class, I know how to be grateful of my blessings!"

As for Myolie Wu, the 'poach call' was personally made by Ricky. Although she felt surprised, she was happy she was appreciated: "TVB did raise me after all, I must be grateful of my blessings! Even if I was offered even more money, I will still respect the contract terms." As for Kevin Cheng offered a 16 fold increase, Myolie laughed and said Kevin needs to treat everyone a meal every day. Bernice felt happy she got the 'royal invite': "Then that means he has confidence in my performance!" It has been widely rumored she already signed with Ricky.

Besides the first line FaDan and Siu Sangs, Ricky also approached several rising artists, including Linda Chung. However, he has not received a response. When asked if Ricky offered a higher pay, would she leave? She said: "I haven't thought of that far. I will be shooting series until February next year. Right now I don't want to look or see." Linda expressed female artists showbiz career is rather short, so she hopes to earn as much as she can in the next few years: "TVB has arranged me with a lot of jobs, aside from shooting series, I hope to make more extra income outside, so I can buy a house for my parents."

Moses Chan was asked if will get a pay raise? He said he isn't shooting series for money, so it does not matter. However Kevin was poached for higher pay, and Bowie Lam gets over 18 million yuan a year. Moses was shocked and let out a 'wow' as he said: "That much? I am rather special, I don't go for the money. As long as I have food to eat and save up for a wife, then I'm fine." Does he have to thank TVB for pairing him and Aimee Chan up? He laughed out loud, and said: "The road with TVB is satisfying and enjoyable. Some people earn money because they need to make a living, we all have different directions. Aimee also received the SMS. (Both leaving together?) She is currently a rising artist, has lots of room for improvement. She never thought of leaving."

Jackie Chan, Li Bingbing, Winston Chao (Chiu Man Suen) two nights ago attended the 1911 charity premiere. 1911 was Jackie Chan's 100th film. As for box office expectation, Jackie Chan instead wanted young people to know from the film that the thriving China now came from a group of self sacrificing forefathers. Has he taught his son Jaycee Chan (Fong Cho Ming)? Jackie Chan said, "I told him as the shoot went on, I learnt along the way myself. Actually our forefathers have done so much for us, I am truly appreciative. I hope he wouldn't pursue extravagance any further." Has Cho Ming achieved his demand? Jackie Chan joked that he was OK. What was his son lacking? Was he not filial enough? Jackie Chan explained that he was just a little short, but Cho Ming has been rather filial. He treated his mother the best. Jackie Chan sounded a little jealous, he said, "No, (is he a big spender?) His Mommy will keep a close eye on him."

He and Bingbing was chatting and laughing, Jackie Chan explained that because Bingbing revealed that she had a friend who was interested in bidding at the "Jackie Chan Cup" charity auction, in particular the Olympic torch that Jackie Chan held. However the bidder was not interested in identifying himself. Jackie Chan asked Bingbing whether the person would not pay, Bingbing said that she would pay on his behalf. Bingbing added that since it was for charity, she had to take action as well.

How much was this charity auction's goal? Jackie Chan said that he did not have any pressure, several million would be enough. Actually he treated it like a meeting with friends. He, Bingbing and Winston Chao were all busy on their own, this promotion was the first chance they had to get together again. In addition if anyone felt pressured, next time no one would come. Will he organize another Jackie Chan Cup? He helplessly said, "No, earlier I beg right and left and only raised 500,000 yuan. After that I would rather pay out of my own pocket for several years. Someone just told me, the charity fund was just in my name only. It didn't really belong to me and everyone should help with fund raising. So we came up with this banquet." Bingbing said that she was interested in the torch because it had sentimental value. Winston Chao said that he did not know anything about collectibles so later he would pay attention.

Speaking of 1911 being invited to be the 24th Tokyo International Film Festival special opening film, Bingbing said that she would be working and did not know whether she would be able to attend. Winston Chao felt that the sooner he knew the date the better, then he could make time.

Bobby AuYeung has spent 30 ‘golden’ years in the entertainment industry. In 1981, he participated in TVB’s Acting Class and when he graduated the next year, he officially became a TVB contracted artist. At the time, he still went by his real name, AuYeung Yiu Chuen (歐陽耀泉) – he had a full head of hair and was skinny, with a 24 inch waist; he describes himself as the ‘Danny Chan’ type. In the past 30 years, he has built a career and family – [in 2000], he won the TV King award for his role as Song Chi in the series "Witness to a Prosecution" and he is the only TVB artist to be nominated for Best Actor at the Asian Emmy Awards for his role in "Dicey Business". Bobby admits that in the past, he had been given the ‘cold shoulder’ by TVB and in fact, was even abandoned by them – luckily, in his dictionary, there is no such word as ‘resentment’ (怨恨), only ‘gratefulness’ for his blessings (飲水思源). Therefore, every year, he makes time in his schedule to return to TVB and film series as a form of repayment.

Some of Bobby’s same year Acting Class classmates include Tony Leung, Stephen Chow, Francis Ng, Eddie Cheung, Eddie Kwan, etc. Upon graduating, each of them rose to ‘leading actor’ status one by one, however at the time, Bobby was still doing mostly small roles [‘ke le fe’] in series. 5 years after graduating from the Acting Class, Bobby had participated in 30 series – unfortunately though, his role in most of those series were so insignificant, most people probably don’t even remember the names of the characters he played.

TVB didn’t promote, but luckily the audiences did

“Back then, it was very rare for someone who came out of TVB not to succeed. I was never promoted, but was able to make it up the ladder on my own. I’m not good-looking, so it’s understandable why they wouldn’t want to promote me, but luckily, the audiences had good taste and knew how to appreciate me – I guess you can say that it’s the audiences who promoted me. Actually, I’m very lucky that the audiences were willing to accept my different types of acting – I’m not the comedian-type, but I’m able to do comedy; in "Forensic Heroes", I wasn’t funny at all, yet the audiences still enjoyed it.”

Bobby started capturing audience’s attention back in 1986, when he participated in grand production series "The Turbulent Decade". To this day, he still has fond memories of the ‘all-star’ cast from that series.

“There were Carina Lau, Margie Tsang, Jamie Chik, Eddie Cheung, Dicky Cheung, Eddie Kwan, etc…just to name a few – in the past, there were plenty of artists. Nowadays, it’s virtually impossible to gather so many first line siu sangs and fa dans all in one series – the norm now is basically one siu sang and one fa dan. This time, in "Men with No Shadows", there is Raymond Lam and myself, which is already a ‘double siu sang’ team.”

Better pay outside of TVB, ‘lucky’ that TVB gave up on him

The breakthrough in Bobby’s career came with the multi-installment series "Files of Justice", which successfully secured his position as ‘first-line male lead’ -- however, it also caused him to leave a company that he had serviced for over a decade.

“Back then, after filming the first and second installments of "Files of Justice", people started to know me and that’s when the invitations for outside jobs started coming in. Prior to my management contract expiring, I had discussed with the Artists Department about changing to a per-series contract, but they pretty much ignored me. All they said was that both parties should think about it more and left it at that – there were no further discussions about the contract. I remember when I was filming "Files of Justice III", the last day of filming was coincidentally also the day my contract was set to expire. At the time, no one sought me out to discuss contract renewal, so having self-knowledge, I took that to mean that they gave up on me! Around the same time, I received an invitation from a Malaysian company that specially liked to ‘pick up’ artists abandoned by TVB, so I accepted. I went over there and filmed a sitcom for them – I was only there for a month but unbelievably received more than 100,000 HKD salary! At the time, my salary at TVB was only about 10,000 HKD a month.”

“I sincerely thank the particular exec at TVB who decided not to renew my contract – if it weren’t for him/her, I wouldn’t know how the outside world is like. That year, the amount of money I made shooting movies and ‘direct to video tape’ series was more than what I had made the previous 10 years combined. Later on, TVB was planning on filming "Files of Justice IV", so the producer requested that I return. In the new contract talks, of course I was no longer going to accept the stipulation of filming 100 shows in 1 year! We ended up re-negotiating the contract terms to a ‘per-series’ contract and that’s the way our collaboration has been up to present day.”
Loves "Armed Reaction" and "Dicey Business" the most

After Bobby returned to TVB, he was tasked as the lead in many series, sometimes filming up to 3 to 4 series a year. At the time, the Mainland China market was not as ‘established’ as it is today.

“There’s a reason why TVB has been at the forefront of the TV industry for so many years. After filming series outside and seeing how sometimes even lighting is lacking, it made me understand that TVB truly has plentiful resources. At TVB, I’ve filmed quite a few series that I personally enjoyed a lot, especially the "Armed Reaction" franchise – now every time I see [the series] producer Kwong Yip Sun (鄺業生), I call him ‘benefactor’ (恩公)! The character ‘Chan Siu Sang’『陳小生』helped me break into the Mainland market and helped me establish the image of ‘good son, good husband, good father’ with audiences. The character was essentially a 100% great character to begin with – having me play the character made it 101% great!”

"Dicey Business" is another one of Bobby’s great works, one that he is extremely proud of. In fact, he highly recommends it as a ‘must-see’ series.

“Earlier, a fan gave me the DVD boxed set of "Dicey Business" as a gift – I spent 2 nights in a row re-watching it. There were a few parts of the series that were especially emotional, to the point that I was moved to tears while watching. It’s not often that I encounter such an excellent script! For most series, the ‘storyline’ comes first and drives the rest of the script – for "Dicey Business" however, the characters came first and drove the storyline. During filming, I didn’t have to change the script at all – I just followed the development of the character and threw myself into the role.”

Specifically praises Myolie Wu and Sire Ma

“In "Dicey Business", Bosco Wong did a very good job. Recently, I watched his performance in "Lives of Omission" and see that he is getting better and better. Earlier in the year, I also noticed Myolie Wu’s performance in "The Rippling Blossom", she has changed as well – in the past, people made fun of her for having a ‘gwing’ look, but now, she really has gotten prettier. I’m not referring to the ‘plastic surgery’ –type pretty, but rather, her looks have ‘opened’ more. I also see the potential for Sire Ma, my sister in "Men With No Shadows" , to be a ‘hot contender’ for the “Most Improved” Award this year – she’s a good girl, very hardworking and doesn’t like to generate rumors.”

Coincidentally, both Sire Ma and Myolie Wu get the chance to collaborate in Bobby’s upcoming series "Yue Fu Hidden Dragon" [temporary name]. Filming an ancient series during the sweltering summer months, Bobby expressed that his ‘record’ was having to change 5 undershirts and 2 pairs of underwear in 1 day due to all the sweat. Laughing, Bobby admitted what attracted him to the series was the group of young actresses that he gets to collaborate with – he says that the fa dans being paired with him are getting younger and younger, invoking the ‘envy’ of his colleagues. One time, he bumped into long time partner Yoyo Mung in the makeup room and jokingly told her that the next time they collaborate in a series, she should portray his ‘stepmother’!

Collaborating with Mainland artists, he feels like a ‘toad at the bottom of the well’

Last year, after wrapping filming for "Men with No Shadows", Bobby accepted 3 Mainland series in a row, including "Ghostcatcher – Legend of Beauty 2" [天師鍾馗] and collaboration with Charmaine Sheh in "Sword-Bearing Female Constable" [帶刀女捕快] . Filming ancient series in the Mainland can be very difficult as well [due to the weather] – luckily, the production team took care of him and always made sure he had a ‘cow horn fan’ (牛角扇) by his side.

“If I don’t film ancient series, I reduce my workload by 50%. You can say that I’m a ‘money hound’ or that I’m just hardworking – either way, if there’s good opportunity, I don’t mind the toil. As long as I get a 1-2 week rest in between each series for me to re-energize, I can accept filming for 8 to 9 months out of the year. After collaborating with Mainland artists, I realize that I’m a ‘toad at the bottom of the well’. This time around, for "Ghostcatcher", I got the chance to collaborate with Mainland actor Pan Chang Jiang, who has a cameo in the series – he is one of Mainland China’s first class actors and producers, the equivalent to the Mainland version of Eric Tsang – everyone knows him. All of us learned a lot from Teacher Pan.”

‘Experienced’ senior actors, not elder ‘green leaf’ actor

On the subject of ‘experienced’ senior actors (資深演員 ), Bobby’s tone became serious.

“I feel that in HK, there is a general lack of respect for experienced senior actors – the thinking is too utilitarian. Why are these actors called ‘gam cho’ (甘草), ‘green leaf’ (綠葉)? [TN: gam cho’ (甘草) is a term used in the industry to describe experienced, senior ‘green leaf’ actors/actresses over 50 years old]. They are a group of actors with plentiful acting experience, yet they are looked down upon as a ‘side dish’ or ‘flavoring’ for the main dishes? Do you think it would be ‘acceptable’ to write a series about ‘old’ people and have Brother Sau (senior actor Wu Fung) be the male lead? After all, Deanie Ip won Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival for her portrayal of an ‘old’ housekeeper and brought glory for HK!”

Awhile back ago, someone had suggested that Bobby become a producer so he could produce his own series. Actually, in this circumstance, it wouldn’t be difficult for him to find a sponsor willing to invest money, but he enjoys working in front of the camera rather than behind the scenes, so he did not consider it. In the future, would he accept becoming a ‘gam cho’ actor himself?

“When that time comes, I may decide to become a producer and film my own series then! If you ask me to stand next to the main lead and play an ‘Uncle’ character, I definitely won’t do it. If they ever arrange for me to play the part of Raymond Lam’s father, I would suggest to them to go have Ron Ng play Raymond’s father instead! Hahahaha!”

Happy to be his wife’s ‘money-tree’

This year marks the 15th wedding anniversary of Bobby and his wife Fu Kit Han. Back then, the couple had a low-key wedding in Canada.

“The exact date is November 25th. I will be working in the Mainland during that time, so there won’t be special celebration. I’m my wife’s ‘money-tree’, so of course, work is more important! Hey, maybe I’ll give her a ‘house’ (樓) as a gift! Haha!”

Playful Bobby pointed to the ‘button’ on his shirt and laughed heartily– apparently, when he said ‘house’ [prounounced ‘lou’ (樓)], he actually meant ‘button’ [also pronounced ‘lou’but different character (鈕)]. However, when it comes to the date of his wedding anniversary, Bobby is very clear with thedate 11/25, even mentioning it twice!

Diligently remembers date of wedding anniversary

“We’re an ‘old couple’ now, so not into the formalties anymore. When we have free time, we like to go around and seek out interesting places to eat or to see things – on anniversaries and such, if there’s time, we we usually just go out to dinner with a few close friends. We definitely won’t do any of the ‘formal’ stuff such as putting on a tuxedo and cutting a cake in front of everyone…plus, my wife is not the socializing type and doesn’t like to go to balls or those types of social gatherings.”

When the Media mentions Mrs. AuYeung, they usually attach her ‘title’: Macau Gambling King Fu Lao Yong’s Granddaughter. From the time his marriage was made public to now, it’s been 15 years, yet occasionally, Bobby’s status as ‘rich tycoon’s grandson-in-law’ is still brought up, even making front page news on magazine covers – luckily though, for Bobby, it no longer bothers him. Bobby reveals that all his earnings go to his wife, so she is truly the ‘keeper’ of the house. Because he knows that he is not good at managing finances, Bobby is perfectly happy with being his wife’s ‘money-tree’: “Yes, I’ve ‘shaken’ so much money out that I’m skinnier now! Haha!”

Bobby and Raymond Lam: no generation gap

In "Men With No Shadows", Bobby collaborates with Raymond Lam for the first time, though on a personal level, they’ve known each other for a long time and are good ‘brothers’. It’s no surprise then that they are able to get along so well on the set and develop good chemistry.

“Raymond is the type of person who is always very calm no matter what type of situation occurs – he’s very persistent with his pace and doesn’t let anyone affect his rhythm. For instance, when we’re filming together, if I happen to be a few minutes late, I’ll start running when I’m within 20 steps of the filming location to show people that I’m trying to hurry over. Raymond however, refuses to run and instead makes his entrance calmly, like a model. I bet you didn’t think that Raymond’s EQ is actually very high, huh? Even when Tavia [Yeung] is yelling at him and saying ‘Raymond Lam, how long are you going to make me wait for you to get here? Feel like it’s been 10 years already!’ In response, all Raymond does is smile.”

“When filming series, if there is a little bit of delay, it’s understandable – after all, we oftentimes film through the night, but at least after work, we can go home and rest. Except Raymond – he often tells me: ‘Good for you! I still have to go shoot a movie!’ At the same time that he was filming "Men with no Shadows", he was also shooting 2 movies simultaneously, plus he had to set aside time to rehearse for his concert – seeing that, I felt exhausted for him!”

Bobby expressed that he does not have any ‘generation gap’ working with younger siu sangs. Back when he was filming with Raymond, he had already been introduced to Mavis Pan – plus he is able to get along well with other younger artists such as Ron Ng, Joel Chan, etc. Asked whether the 2 of them introduced Viann Zhang or Florinda Ho to him, Bobby laughed and said: “No!”

Yesterday Joey Yung promoted for her November 14th JOEY & JOEY METRO RADIO CONCERT. This is her first time collaborating with music producer Edward Chan. The organizers gave Joey a guitar to encourage her to continue taking lessons and have the opportunity to perform with her guitar on stage.

Joey's manager, Mani, was still in Beijing working and did not appear with her. Joey frankly said she wasn't used to it. She said: "I'm not too used to this, but I know she's helping us pave the road, expanding our development in the North!"

When speaking of Mainland scooping away many HK artists to shoot series for high salaries, Joey spoke out and supported TVB. She expressed: "The Mainland market is huge, it's understandable, but TVB has a very practical dissemination effect too, and has been stabled for so many years! Under the many year relationship and the relations my company has with TVB, I don't have plans to change anything, the relationship is worth thousands!"

When speaking of her concert, Joey expressed she has not planned to invite any guest performers. She hopes to purely hold her own personal concert, and meet with fans and friends through music. She laughed and said she received a lot of guitars from thoughtful people, which really moved her: "The people around me are really so encouraging. I got like 10 guitars at home, almost can't fit them all! I never thought there would be such huge reactions. Now I must continue to play guitar, and have to put in the effort to learn and practice!"

Yesterday Bowie Lam accepted Eileen Cha's radio interview. Regarding the rumors that a Mainland company offered him 18 million yuan to sign a contract with them, Bowie laughed and said it's not just the price. As to the rumor that he'll be shooting TVB's War and Beauty 2, he expressed that even if he does shoot the series, it is not about the money, but because he wants to give back to fans for their many years of support. Earlier he met up with Ricky Wong, but Bowie expressed the purpose was not to talk about going over to his company, they chatted a lot about random topics.

Also, it was said TVB will soon be shooting the War and Beauty 2 sales presentation clip, and wants Bowie to take the lead. Reporters contacted Bowie yesterday over the phone and he frankly said his workload in Mainland is piled up, so he does not know if he has time and probably won't be shooting the sales presentation. However, he does admit he will be shooting the promotional clips for upcoming series When Heaven Burns.

TVB is currently being under attack all around, Mona Fong ordered TVB executives Mark Lee and Stephen Chan to bring out the 'friendship cards' to keep their artists and employees. Virgina Lok describes TVB as a battleship and enters the battle with high spirits. As of yesterday, TVB received 16 letters of resignation, the majority of them were from scriptwriters and script editors.

Facing the 'poaching' threat, Production and Resource Director Virgina Lok said directly: "This time, TVB directed me to give pay raises to artists and discuss with the artists as soon as possible." Yesterday morning, she and Production Department Head Catherine Tsang were back at TVB city. Catherine was walking hurriedly into TVB city, but stopped for a short interview. Asked if she will speed up in discussing scripts and contracts with artists? Are there any artists in particular that she is discussing with? She just said: "We have been discussing all along."

Virgina responded to Mona Fong mentioning Steven Ma by name that he should stay with TVB, she said: "Mona Fong wants everyone to stay! (What tactics do you have for artists to renew their contracts?) Each month, we discuss with artists. We are now speeding up on the discussions and plan to increase salaries. We do not care who it is, who stays or who leaves. (Who will have the pay raises? Who in particular will be persuaded to stay?) Actually we all know, those under TVB management still have long contracts, we try convince everyone to stay."

Admits Kevin Cheng is paid 160,000 per episode

It was said Kevin Cheng is paid 160,000 yuan per episode when shooting in Mainland. Is this 16 times TVB's pay? She said: "Kevin is already at that pay! I can tell you all that he is not the highest paid, and 160,000 yuan per episode is not too high, only OK! However, Kevin and TVB still has many years in the contract."

Is she worried that many artists will leave? Miss Lok said: "Mark Lee said before, everyone in this industry is an expert at war. To us, it is a good thing that there is a war. Perhaps some people think its like a sightseeing boat after a while, but we are a battleship, so everyone is very energetic. Now that there are people trying to steal, that means we are valuable! In fact, before the crisis, we already started giving pay raises and now we are just adding more, but it is different for everyone. Some artists earned big money in Mainland, but doesn't want to drift from TVB, like Charmaine Sheh, who changed to a per-series contract. Joe Ma did one TVB series in the last year, but worked nonstop in Mainland. The reports said that artists are fleeing, that is completely not true."

1/5 of behind-the-scenes crew resigns

TVB Deputy Director of Foreign Affairs, Tsang Sing Ming, expressed that the HR department gave him updated news. Yesterday 4 more resignation letters were received, totaling 16. Most came from the TV program department, which consists of 280 employees and this takes up only a small part, not too great of an impact. After TVB's persuasion, many already changed their minds and agreed to stay for a pay raise close to the market value.

Yesterday Anita Yuen attended a charity event, and when speaking of the recent 'poaching' crisis, she has been viewed as a secret target. It turns out Anita does have interactions with TVB, but unfortunately there have not been any further plans. Anita said: "They come and discuss with me occasionally. I am currently freelance and still haven't decided on anything yet. Aside from the favorable price and attractive script, the co-stars are also very important, must be handsome guys. However, I don't want to co-star with Mr. Cheung (Chilam Cheung) because I already see him day and night. Unless the price really is extremely tempting, I won't do it because we collaborated once before and it did not go well. Even friends who I am too familiar with, it won't be too good either. Just like Jordan Chan, if we shoot argument scenes, we end up not getting along for real."

Anita hopes to create sparks with Felix Wong and does not fear of his 'explosive' personality. She said: "We had several opportunities to collaborate before, I just feel his explosive personality is actually just because he has expectations. I fear sloppy and not serious co-stars the most."

Interviewer: Wang Man Ling (汪曼玲) – a veteran (30 year) entertainment reporter who is highly respected in the industry. She has her own weekly interview column in Mingpao Weekly Magazine.

The series "Lives of Omission" aired its finale a few weeks ago and with the popularity of the series, TVB took the opportunity to heavily promote main leads Michael Tse and Fala Chen – whether they will become TV King and Queen or not depends upon the Heavens. I [Wang Man Ling] have never been one to ‘chase’ TV series – the only reason why I decided to turn on the TV and watch the finale to "Lives of Omission" was because on that day, I had interviewed one of the co-stars of the series, Ben Wong. During our interview, Ben very excitedly told me about the storyline of the finale and how actor Damian Lau encouraged him to add his own more ‘emotional’ dialogue for the death scene of his character ‘Lat Gerng’ (辣薑) so as to leave a deeper impression on the audience. Hearing this made me interested in watching.

At the celebration event for the series, the camera was primarily focused on the 4 main siu sangs and fa dans, barely panning over to anyone else – since Ben stood at the very end of the second row, he had even less chance of being seen on camera.

Many years ago [mid-90s], Ben Wong participated in the series "A Kindred Spirit" playing the character of ‘Ah Hoi’ – a very popular character at the time. After he left TVB [TN: He left TVB in 2000 and went to ATV, then to Mainland] and later returned, he had to start all over again -- though he didn’t have to start from the very bottom, his only option was to take on supporting roles. However, Ben himself is very understanding of how things work at the company and therefore does not ‘insist’ on playing lead roles; rather, he focuses all his effort on portraying every single character well.

The opportunities that Ben Wong received at TVB weren’t too bad – being able to portray the character of ‘Ah Hoi’ was surely something to be envious about. Later on, because he wanted to challenge himself and seek a breakthrough in his career, he decided to leave TVB and try his luck outside. That decision definitely opened his eyes and broadened his horizons: “Since I was at TVB for so many years, I very naturally got used to the company’s structure and methods. Filming series outside is a whole different experience, as it allowed me to interact with different production teams and venture outside the box.” During that time, he also got to know quite a few ‘teachers’ – for example, lighting crew and cameramen – who taught him a lot about how to arrange lighting for various scenes and also where cameras should be placed for ideal camera angles. He continued to learn different things and it helped him adapt to the different environment.

Ben started at TVB as a host for the children’s program "Flash Fax" [閃電傳真機] , where he remained for 5 years before being transferred to the drama department. “After having hosted a children’s program for 5 years, I couldn’t exactly consider myself a ‘newcomer’, but in the drama department, there was no doubt that I was a newbie.” The process of adapting to the new environment was quite difficult for him: “For my first series, I was already tasked to go to the Mainland to film an ancient series. I had no acting experience whatsoever, but yet, in other people’s minds, I could not be considered a newcomer.”

A feeling of defeat unlike any he had experienced before

During filming of that series, all of the martial arts moves were taught on the spot by the choreographer – as soon as they learned the moves, the actors had to put them into action right away; not only that, the artists had to be very alert. “It was a very difficult situation, as I had to pay attention to so many different things -- my own moves as well as those of my opponent, the position of my feet, facial expressions, etc.” Only a few martial arts moves and couldn’t even handle it? At the time, Ben felt a huge sense of defeat – in those types of circumstances, they would just replace you immediately with a stuntman to do the moves. “In my mind, I kept saying “I’m dead! Am I really that bad that I can’t even handle a few kungfu moves? Definitely gave myself a lot of ‘invisible’ pressure!” Especially when everyone’s eyes seem to be on you, the pressure is even greater: “A few moves and have to NG 3 or 4 times – it’s embarrassing!”

At the moment he was feeling a sense of defeat unlike any he had experienced before, a cameraman whom he had worked with back when he was hosting children’s programs saw his plight and offered words of encouragement: “Ben, you don’t need to be afraid. You’re only an actor – if you are not able to do the moves, the choreographer will change things around so that you are able to do it – after all, you’re not a stuntman….the most important thing is to pay attention to the facial expressions and the acting piece of it.” These words were like an alarm that suddenly woke him and steadied him – he no longer felt frustrated, but rather felt energized and slowly, he was able to understand the essence of the moves. “That was many years ago and perhaps no one remembers anymore, but to me, the impact was very deep.”

It can be said that Ben’s development at TVB ‘falls short of the best, but is better than the worst’: “Portraying the character ‘Ah Hoi’ gave me a very good foundation and helped me establish affinity early with the audience. It’s almost like a singer who encounters a good song – as soon as you hear the song, you know who sings it. You just need to mention the character of ‘Ah Hoi’ in "A Kindred Spirit" and people know it was me who played the character. Out of more than 1000 episodes [TN: 1128 episodes to be exact], I participated in 800 of them -- being able to play the same character for 4 years, definitely very deeply rooted foundation.”

Does not care about the amount of screentime he has

After filming series outside of TVB for 4 years, he returned to the company in 2005, playing mostly supporting roles. In "Lives of Omission", his part is considered a pretty heavy one – he plays an undercover agent. Ben was reminded of something that veteran actor Lau Dan told him: “HK’s male actors need to portray 2 types of characters in order to become popular: one is a cop and the other is a triad vigilante (蠱惑仔).” Looking from the perspective of films, that definitely does seem to be the case. "Infernal Affairs", "A Better Tomorrow", "Young and Dangerous", all were films that had good box office results as well as good word of mouth and pushed the male actors to the peaks of their careers. “An undercover agent is the perfect combination of the two.” Ben feels that he was lucky to be given the opportunity to portray such a character and he treasures it, as it demonstrates that the producer and writers trust his abilities.

After returning to TVB, Ben never stopped filming series, it’s just that up to this point, he didn’t have very many important roles. To continue sharpening his skills, he made the decision to accept every series he was offered – as long as the director asked him, he would film it, doesn’t matter whether it’s 1 episode or 2 episodes. “In "The Life and Times of a Sentinel", I was only in 1 episode – why did I still film it? Because I really liked the character – sometimes, filming 1 episode is like filming an entire individual story…after the deed is done, then time to retreat.”

He accepts every offer regardless of how much screentime he has because he wants to demonstrate that he is a competent actor, but he also understands the ‘survival of the fittest’ concept: “I still need to make a living.” As for how to be happy and comfortable with only participating in 1 episode, Ben expresses: “That’s the homework that I give myself. If I have to feel uncomfortable or unhappy, I could still feel that way playing a lead role. I also don’t like to keep asking myself why I’m not main lead or why so-and-so makes more money than me. I only look to see how much water is in my own cup – if there is a lot of water, I consider myself lucky. With a lot of things, it depends on how you look at it.”

When some directors ask him to participate in a series, they tell him that it gives them reassurance: “How should I comprehend this? All I can do is try my best – I know that those people are giving me face and taking my feelings into consideration.” Even if the words are discouraging, he still listens and maintains good EQ: “You could say I’m used to it already, or you could say that I’m discerning – either way, I understand how the game is played.” He continues: “There’s a saying – we’re usually most grateful for things after they’ve occurred and we’ve had a chance to reflect. Going through those experiences helps me handle my roles better.” He doesn’t complain, even if treated unfairly? “It’s not like I’m rich or anything. If I only remain at the same level [of acting] all the time, it’s not enough to get me through life. When it comes to acting, you need to be willing to try different things in order to mature. Even being a villain, you need to have the right expressions, the right spirit – need to bring a human aspect to the character to some extent.”

Beginning and end of salary cycle

Ben is the 4th among 9 children in his family. When he was little, the family was so poor, they endured days when they simply eat white rice mixed with salt and oil – most of the time, they would only have 1 dish to accompany their meal. His father was a street vendor and had a small stall at the local street market, selling Cantonese barbeque delicacies: “Later on, because we offended some people, they would not let my dad open his stall anymore. He ended up taking a job as a security guard and made a lot less money. At least as a street vendor, he was able to bring home cash every day, plus whatever food he had leftover he could bring home for the family to eat.”

From the time he was in secondary school, Ben already understood the disparity between the ‘beginning’ and ‘end’ of a salary cycle. “When we came home and saw that there was only a plate of fermented tofu, half a salted egg, yam porridge, or oil and salt mixed with rice on the table, then we knew that it must be the ‘end’ of the salary cycle.” In order to help keep the family afloat, everyone chipped in with small jobs such as ‘cutting threads’: “With more physical jobs, all of us had gotten injured at some point – ‘cutting threads’ was safer, since couldn’t get hurt.”

At a young age, the boys in the family would ‘keep watch’ at the sewing factories: “As soon as the workers finished sewing a pair of jeans, they would throw it on the floor and we would quickly grab it – as soon as we had a dozen pairs, we would tie them up and throw them in the car, then once we got home, we would get to work cutting threads. Once completed, we would receive our money.” It was only during times when friends or relatives would visit and sometimes take them out to dinner that the family would get the chance to eat some good food.

His mother was his very first fan

With his difficult childhood, Ben quickly learned to be independent – whether it’s cooking, cleaning, or mending clothes, all of those were common tasks for him: “Amongst my siblings, even though there were 7 males and 2 females, it didn’t make a difference when it came to tasks around the house, as we all took turns doing them regardless of what type of tasks they were. It always seemed like there were endless tasks to be done.”

With a poor family background, Ben had to start working early: “When I was 17, I stopped asking my family for money. If I wanted to buy something, I would work non-stop, sometimes even working several jobs and save enough money to buy it myself.” After he started working and making his own money, Ben would make sure to buy things for his mom once in awhile – he remembers that when he bought her a purse, she didn’t want to use it: “My mom is truly very frugal. She does not splurge on any luxuries and never wants us to spend money on her. When I or any of my siblings would give her money for her personal use, she would save it up and then give it back to us. After I entered the industry, she was my very first fan.” Without his mother, the family would not be so united.

Nine kids having to grow up in a ‘shady’ area of Shum Shui Po and constantly having to go back and forth from the street market to their home, was there a danger of falling in with the wrong crowd? Ben proudly states: “The nine of us, none of us turned into bad people. Even though we would see a lot of shady types around the street market (loan sharks for example), luckily none of us were influenced by any of that.” Each member of the family may be independent, but yet they’re still close knit, meeting up at least 3 to 4 times a month. Also, if any member of the family needs help, the others are right there: “Blood is thicker than water, but since we’ve learned to be independent from a young age, we’re not the type to do huge family gatherings all the time. When someone in the family is in need, we all show up.”

In the Chinese culture, emotions are usually restrained, so huge displays of emotion, even within a family, are generally few and far between. Reflecting on this, Ben agrees that it’s the same with his family: “My parents rarely ever hug us or say things that are touching, but all of us are used to it already. None of us ever felt that our parents didn’t love us or that there was no warmth in the family.”

Before getting married, agreed not to have kids

Ben’s mother passed away relatively young (in her 60s), primarily due to the difficult life she led. He remembers a story about his mother: “When I was 40, I found out that my youngest brother was born with one kidney – all this time, none of us knew this. One time, we were having a conversation and when my brother mentioned it, my mother immediately said: ‘I’m sorry about that. I will give you one of my kidneys!’ When my brother heard this, he was in tears and said ‘No! That’s the way I was born and it is my destiny.’” During this part of the interview, upon thinking about his benevolent mother, Ben could not hold back his tears – he had to compose himself before we were able to continue.

For her 9 children, Ben’s mother led by example and in her own unique way, taught her children the basics of life: “She was always thinking of others before herself, it was very exhausting. In addition to maintaining the street vending business and running around constantly, she also had to take care of her 9 children.” Ben expressed that he wanted to buy a house for his mother, but unfortunately, he was not able to fulfill this wish. “I wanted her to have a toil-free life later on.”

6 years ago, Ben got married and because he didn’t want to ‘drift’ outside anymore, made the decision to return to TVB: “Even though I don’t make much money at TVB, it’s a stable job and I can remain in HK most of the time – it’s better than having to be away 8 months out of the year.” Before getting married, Ben and his wife already agreed that they would not have children: “It may not be difficult to raise a child, but teaching them is very hard and it’s a huge responsibility. I don’t feel that I’d be able to handle it.”

Regarding how to maintain a healthy marriage, Ben has his own thoughts – first and foremost though, love must exist: “It’s necessary to love each other’s flaws as well. Also, don’t try to force the other person to change who they are for you. Our backgrounds are different and we grew up in different environments, plus encountered different life experiences – it’s impossible for one person to change in order to accommodate the other. If the person is able to change, then that’s admirable, but if not, I wouldn’t be disappointed.” Ben and his wife are both Christians – having the same faith helps them have the same understanding of what love is all about.

“Each person has a certain amount of selfishness within them – it’s part of human nature. We accept each other’s selfishness and accept the fact that neither of us are perfect. If each of us brings 50% to the relationship, added together, that makes 100%. Individually, it’s impossible to get to 100%.”
As a couple, a similar value system is also important. Of course, it would be great if they could have a nice home, fancy car, etc. but if they don’t have these things, that’s fine too because they have learned to adjust: “Adjusting is also ‘homework’ for me. Of course, we will have always have desires, but also need to learn to be satisfied with what we have currently. There are things that I wish for as well, but I try to balance it with gratitude for what I do have. I may not have what I want now, but it may occur later – constantly waiting for opportunities.”

Due to his childhood situation, Ben is a very independent person – from a young age, he learned to rely on himself and it’s not easy for him to trust people. Even something such as applying makeup prior to filming, he likes to take it on himself. “It wasn’t until later on that I realized, in the entertainment industry, whether shooting series or films, it’s all about teamwork and having mutual trust in each other is important. They are all professionals – letting go and letting others take care of matters puts less stress on myself…plus letting people know I have confidence in them, makes me feel happy as well.”
