Eligible bachelor, Aaron Kwok (郭富城) is finally getting married and Jacky Cheung (張學友) expressed he must congratulate him during the celebration dinner banquet on 28 March. When asked if he will sing to congratulate the winner, Jackie Chan, Jacky Cheung said: "Nope, I am only there for a short while and need to sing for my concert in China tomorrow. (Is your wife, May Lo (羅美薇) supporting personally?) You know she will not and you still ask me."
Jacky Cheung, Eric Tsang, Michael Miu and his wife Jamie Chik, Angela Tong, and Janet Chow attended the film premiere of Din Tao: Leader of the Parade.
Jacky is currently on break after completing his concert and in the meantime, does not intend to accept any new films. He plans to spend time with his two daughters during their summer vacation and teach them tennis. When speaking of Andy Lau refusing to expose his daughter's appearance, but Jacky and Andy are both Heavenly Kings, does he get to see Andy's daughter? Jacky modestly said: "I'm a Heavenly King, but with "out-of-date" in front of it." Is Jacky still the God of Songs? He laughed: "There are many God of Songs nowadays, all over the streets."
Jacky Cheung Hok Yau after completing the fifth show of his concert series two nights ago took a two day break before continuing on with the remaining 15 shows. During this break, Hok Yau after the show two nights ago announced good news. He urged friends to give rice instead of floral arrangements, through the St. James' Settlement People's Food Bank for the needy in Hong Kong. Now over 7,000 kg of rice was already raised. Friends who donated included Andy Lau Tak Wa, Nicholas Tse Ting Fung and Cecilia Cheung Pak Chi, Kelly Chen Wai Lam, Tong Hok Tak, Julian Cheung Chi Lam and Anita Yuen Wing Yi, Joey Yung Cho Yi and others.
When Hok Yau appeared he tripped on the bags of rice on the stage. Hok Yau sat on the bag and joked, "After the concert my legs are inevitably wobbly, haha." Later, manager Chan Suk Fun and Director Andrew Lau Wai Keung who produced the concert music film and animation cut a cake to celebrate the successful performance.
Hok Yau was unable to attend the Hong Kong Film Award due to his concert. Hok Yau said that he never thought that he would be a Best Actor nominee. Because the character in the film was very light, he was surprised to be nominated and joked that he treated it like he won twice.
He also did not forget to congratulate Best Actor Nicholas Tse Ting Fung. Were the results what he expected? He said that he did not have any expectation so he did not think about it before. However he has seen Lau Ka Ling's award winning film and thought that the film revolved around the male character. Ka Ling and the other actress Li Bingbing did not have a lot of screen time, but Ka Ling performed very well. Did he feel bad for his co-star Tang Wei? Hok Yau said, "No, because every nominee are of a certain caliber. You might as well say no matter who won you had to feel bad for the others." Ting Fung defeated four elders. Hok Yau said learning has no order, not to mention that Nick Cheung Ka Fai already won Best Actor two years ago and Chow Yun Fat was a Best Actor frequent guest. Would Hok Yau see Best Actor as a goal? He honestly said, "You can be only if you put in an effort, I really haven't so I don't deserve the award."
Earlier, Jacky Cheung took the lead in breaking TVB’s ‘monopoly’ on singers and accepted an interview with ATV. Yesterday, he took it one step further by filming a TV special for ATV entitled [Jacky Cheung: Private Corner] and accepting an interview with ATV host Jerry Lam Hiu Fung.In the interview, which was conducted at a musical equipment company, Jacky not only walks the audience through the entire process of how his album was formed – from early planning stages to selection of songs to actual production – he also goes in depth and talks about the content as well as musical style of each song. In addition to incorporating behind-the-scenes footage of the album’s production and various MVs, the musical special will also interview the creative musical crew involved with the production of the album in efforts to familiarize the audience with the unique qualities and techniques of the album from a professional perspective. The program is scheduled to air on ATV on February 14th.
With no immediate resolution in sight to the royalties dispute between TVB and the big 4 record companies, Jacky Cheung has been bravely speaking out against TVB and has taken the lead in accepting interviews with ATV in Cantonese. On the day of his press conference [for his album], TVB also did not send any reporters or crew to interview him, causing there to be speculation that perhaps both sides (Jacky and TVB) are not on good terms. Two days ago, Jacky attended the premiere of the Shaw Brothers movie [[72 Tenants of Prosperity]] as the “male lead”. At the event, with the help of good friend Eric Tsang as ‘go-between’, he finally ‘broke’ TVB’s boycott by simultaneously accepting an interview with both TVB and i-Cable; no wonder even Jacky himself exclaimed: “Wow! This is definitely a defining moment!”
Shaw Brothers Chinese New Year gala film [[72 Tenants of Prosperity]] held its premiere day before yesterday. Most of the TVB artists who participated in the film (over 100 total) were in attendance to support the premiere, leading producer Eric Tsang to give them a huge 90 degree bow in appreciation. In a further show of appreciation, Eric told the artists: “Endless thanks!”. He also indicated jokingly that since Jacky is his good friend, he can “take advantage” and “use” him to promote the film.
During the event, Eric indicated that he is “absolutely sure” that TVB will send a crew to interview Jacky. Laughing, he said: “In fact, TVB will also do a [[Jacky World]] special and broadcast his songs.” Moments later, holding a microphone with the logo for TVB’s entertainment show [[Scoop]] on the front, Eric went over to interview Jacky, pulling host and reporter Lai Tze Shan with him. Playfully, Eric asked Jacky: “When was the last time TVB interviewed you?” Jacky responded (also playfully): “Well, let me see, I need to count back…hey, am I allowed to sing now?” Then, Jacky breaks out in song, singing the first line to a popular Chinese New Year tune in Mandarin. Eric then follows with: “See, Jacky opened his ‘golden mouth’ to sing…I told you that everything would be okay!”
As Lai Tze Shan finished her interview and was about to step away, i-Cable’s host Wei Tze Ho quickly approached; Eric then immediately told Tze Shan to stay and continue the interview, causing Jacky to be interviewed simultaneously in Cantonese by both TVB and i-Cable. Even Jacky himself exclaimed: “Wow! This is definitely a defining moment!” A reporter then asked if this interview will be broadcast in its entirety? I-Cable’s host quickly handed the microphone over to Eric, who jokingly pushed it away and said: “Go away! The big stations have the big stations’ way of doing things and big famous people have big famous people’s way of doing things!” Jacky expressed that to be able to interview with both stations using Cantonese, there’s a feeling of cooperation and camaraderie. As for Eric, he expressed that he hopes the new year (year of the tiger) will bring with it a ‘good atmosphere’.
Afterwards, Jacky laughed and stated that only Eric has the ability to arrange for both TVB and i-Cable to simultaneously interview him; he states: “All of a sudden I feel that there are no more barriers, not sure if I am dreaming. I’ve been in this industry so many years, yet this is the first time that I’ve experienced this type of situation; it’s very exciting.” Regarding his earlier comments about supporting a “combined” music award ceremony causing friction among the stations (with Metro Radio accusing RTHK of ‘pretending to be the big boss’), Jacky responded: “I’ve reflected on it….it’s my fault…there are definitely obstacles to the 4 stations holding a ‘combined’ award ceremony. Perhaps the music industry can look into this further and come up with an award ceremony that has mutually agreed upon standards.”
Eric Tsang indicated that he is not afraid that him being the ‘go-between’ will cause him to be reprimanded by TVB: “As long as it makes the audiences happy, I will do it. To be honest, both parties are actually fine – there are no problems there….rumors flying left and right is the problem. It’s only a royalties dispute between the companies – the artists themselves are not a problem….though there could be a possibility of ‘separating’ the interviews at the time of broadcast (referring to the simultaneous interview with Jacky).”
TVB top management Virginia Lok expressed that she welcomes all media to come show their support for Shaw Brothers films – in fact, they especially invited i-Cable to the premiere. With regard to whether TVB will air Jacky’s interview, Ms. Lok replied: “Why wouldn’t we? He’s the ‘heart and soul’ of this film…however I don’t know how much of it will air – we’ll find out at that time.” So at other events, will this situation not be allowed then? Ms Lok replied: “All media outlets are invited to movie premieres; movies and television are different…in terms of television-related events, we can talk about that later."
Due to the royalty dispute between TVB and the big 4 record companies, both sides have participated in “boycott” activities, with the big 4 companies now allowing their artists to accept interviews with ATV and i-Cable in Cantonese.
Yesterday, God of Song Jacky Cheung held a press conference for his new Cantonese album [[ Private Corner]]; not only did ATV send a whole production crew and reporters from their regular news department to attend the press conference, they also arranged for Jacky’s interview with them to air during the regular nightly news hour – demonstrating how important the interview is for ATV. As a result, Jacky became the first artist from the Big 4 record companies to “appear” on ATV since the royalty dispute erupted – it also marked the second time in 19 years that Jacky has appeared on ATV. For today’s artists to be able to appear on other TV stations and not just be limited to TVB, Jacky expressed that this is definitely a healthy sign.
As an artist under the Universal recording label, Jacky once expressed that TVB was being too unreasonably restrictive, indicating that TVB does not provide a lot of support to its contracted singers, yet are quick to “freeze” (suspend) them on any little thing. In addition to over 100 reporters from various media outlets in Hong Kong and Asia attending yesterday’s press conference for Jacky’s new album [[ Private Corner]] being released today, top management from ATV (Yip Jia Bao) and i-Cable (Wu Rong Xing) were also invited to attend. TVB management Virginia Lok was also in attendance, however the station did not send any reporters or crew to the event.
Jacky accepted an interview with both i-Cable and ATV in Cantonese. Since ATV does not have an Entertainment News department, they sent a crew from their regular news department to report on the event and also interview Jacky. In addition, ATV arranged to have Jacky’s interview air during their regular nightly news hour, thereby showing how much they respected the interview. During the interview, Jacky expressed that music should be able to reach all audiences through all media outlets so that the more people who can hear Cantonese music, the better. He said that he doesn’t mind attending a music program put on by other TV stations as long as he has time; he also hoped that there would not be any “monopoly” type situation where artists would be affected. ATV manager Yip Jia Bao also indicated during the interview that he welcomes the “open attitude” of the record companies and that there are plans for ATV to produce a series of music-related variety shows. Jacky expressed that in Taiwan, he did an interview with a regular (non-entertainment) news crew once, but in Hong Kong, this was his very first time, so he was very excited.
Since Jacky has not released a new Cantonese album in 5 years, his record company Universal spent HKD 3 million for the press conference – to repay the generosity, Jacky personally performed 2 songs from his album at the event. Even though earlier in the month, Jacky had reprimanded TVB for their actions, Virginia Lok (from TVB management) did make time to attend, and Mr. Huang Jian Tao from Universal’s top management personally attended to her at the conference.
With regard to each of the major TV stations having top management in attendance at the press conference, Jacky expressed that it is a good thing, as it is better for them to have a cooperative attitude rather than a belligerent one. In terms of TVB not sending any reporting crew to the event, Jacky said: “Yes, that’s true…for them, it has to do with procedural and process stuff, so no need to worry about it.” He revealed that in the future, there are plans to appear on both i-Cable and ATV for interviews and to promote his album. Even though he will not be appearing in any TVB shows any time soon, he will still be participating in the promotional efforts for TVB/Shaw Brother’s film “72 Tenants of Prosperity” because his role as “singer” is completely separate from his role as “actor” and he is very clear when it comes to this.
When asked about Hacken Lee insisting to this day that he will be conducting interviews with i-Cable in Mandarin only, Jacky indicated that it his personal choice. Jacky says that for himself, collaboration with other TV stations is based on whether the timing and style of the project matches his own agenda; also he indicated that not being limited to just appearing on TVB shows is a healthy sign. Asked about whether he is worried his relationship with TVB will deteriorate as a result, Jacky replied: “If they ask me to do a film for them, I will definitely do it. In terms of singing, it will have to wait until after the royalty dispute is over. Of course, I also hope that TVB would be able to air MVs because at the end of the day, music is music.” However, Jacky did express that he is not happy with the way TVB handles awards ceremonies nowadays: “By editing out so many important parts in the awards ceremonies, it’s not very respectful and makes it very hurtful to musicians and recording artists – it’s really not a matter of ‘appearing’ on their station or not, but rather a matter of ‘respect.’” Jacky said that there are plans to air his MVs on ATV and i-Cable in the future.
Though Jacky was affected by the economic meltdown and Lehman Brothers situation last year, he still personally took on the production costs of his new Cantonese album. Jacky expressed that the cost was in the “7 figures” but it was necessary because of his high standards when it comes to the quality of his album. In terms of music quality, Jacky says that this is his best album to date, however it is also the most expensive (production-wise) compared to his previous albums: “Maintaining high quality when it comes to music is important – I believe money can always be earned back. Even though the album may not make as much money as it used to, I don’t believe that it will be a loss.” One of the features of the album is a special song dedicated to the late Lydia Shum (famous host and Jacky’s “god-mother”). Another feature is a special limited edition glass cover on the album, however due to the huge expense, this edition will only be available on the internet and will cost approximately HKD 15000 a piece.
Back in 1991, Jacky was once “frozen” by TVB for appearing on a charity show organized by ATV to benefit flood victims in China. However, due to his status as one of the most popular and beloved singers in Hong Kong at that time, TVB quickly “unfroze” him and allowed him to appear on their shows again afterward.
