TV King, Kevin Cheng (鄭嘉穎), Grace Chan (陳凱琳), Kay Tse (謝安琪), Wong You Nam (黃又南), Luk Wing Kuen (陸永) and others had been filming new series, Blue Veins (殭) continuously in Tseung Kwan O TVB City (將軍澳無綫電視廣播城). Many rumours were circulating due to the sensitivity of the series theme.

One crew staff exposed that on Saturday (28 March 2015), they were preparing for a boxing scene in the filming studio and it was abnormal that the artistes made many NG without any apparent reasons at all. Suddenly, there was some crying sounds such as 'wu...wu...wu... 嗚…嗚…嗚…' in the filming studio. Although the crew team felt creepy, but they continued with the filming as usual. However, the crew staff discovered blood stains when entered the male washroom. At first, the staff assumed it was blood plasma as props used for filming but dismissed the thought after examining it: "It did not resemble blood plasma and the artiste who used the blood plasma as props for filming did not go to washroom at all. This is very eerie!"

Luk Wing Kuen guessed it could be snoring sounds

The incident was circulated in TVB City instantly and Luk Wing Kuen laughed and said: "That night, I was not at the studio and they heard weird sounds? I heard it all the time and could it be Wong You Nam and my snoring sounds? As for blood stains, other artistes and I applied blood make-up and could it be somebody leave it behind?" Wong You Nam said: "I did not notice it but filming the boxing scene was very noisy. Where did the 'wu...wu...' sound come from?"

Anjaylia Chan and Winki Lai believed it was unrelated to supernatural

Anjaylia Chan (陳嘉寶) and Winki Lai (賴慰玲) were filming in the studio on that particular night and Anjaylia said: "It is normal to have additional takes for action scenes. The director tended to film in many perspectives in order to see the effects. More NG does not mean any problems. (How to explain when blood stains was discovered in male washroom?) No idea and I did not go in at all. Perhaps it was left behind by some artistes whom applied blood make-up." Winki believed it was unrelated to supernatural and everything was normal.

Kay Tse replied filming progress was smooth

Film producer, Joe Chan (陳維冠) expressed he did not hear any complaints about the incident from crew team and director: "The cast enjoyed filming the series." Singer, Kay Tse replied through her manager: "The filming progress is smooth and nothing abnormal, but I did not film the boxing scene on that night."

Nina Paw Hee-ching dedicated the best years of her life to ATV. Not once during a glittering 33-year career did the award-winning actress seriously think of leaving the television station she regarded as family.

The veteran star - affectionately called Paw Jie or Sister Paw, by people in the entertainment industry because of the elder sister and mother figures she has played for much of her career - had never stepped outside ATV until she switched to Ricky Wong Wai-kay's Hong Kong Television Network in late 2012.

This was the point at which she felt there was nothing more she could do with the struggling station as it no longer produced its own dramas.

Needless to say, Paw could not help but feel sad when the government decided last Wednesday not to renew ATV's licence because of the lack of a sustainable business plan.

"I contributed my best time of my life to ATV … The television station has given out lots of positive energy. ATV staff have been discriminated against but have always worked hard," she told Commercial Radio two days after the announcement.

When mainland investor Wong Ching took over ATV in 2010, he claimed he would transform it into the "CNN of Asia". Resources were put mostly into news and talk shows, while the production of drama series was cut drastically.

"I just hosted infotainment shows. It was not the artistic life for an actress and should not be an artiste's major job," Paw sighed. "I found myself useless there."

The reason for her departure may have foretold ATV's fate - when a television station stops making its own productions, there's nothing left to keep its business afloat, not to mention retaining its talent.

Paw - born in 1949 to well-known actor Bao Fong and actress Liu Su - should still have ample opportunities to fly high in her acting career. Her brother, Peter Pau Tak-hei, is also in the family business and won an Oscar for best cinematography in 2001 for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

But something more important than fame and honours has guided Paw during her long career.

Although better known for her television roles, Paw started out on the silver screen. Under the influence of her parents, who both had left-wing political leanings, Paw joined the Great Wall Film Production in 1968. In her 10 years with the company, she was mostly known for her leading role in the White Haired Witch in 1980, which co-starred Henry Fong Ping, who later became her husband.

Yet while she jumped back and forth between cinema and television and moved in glamorous circles, Paw was never seduced by the dazzling temptations of show business. In all these years, she strictly followed her personal philosophy of leading a simple life with gratitude - something that might be echoed by many ATV staff members.

"Veterans in ATV developed a mentality of not pursuing too much fame and wealth. As we were always at the nadir, we learned how to cope with anything," Paw says.

The "treasure of ATV" recalls the 1980s, when late tycoon Deacon Chiu Te-ken was in charge, as the most glorious time during her years at the station.

"Chiu was the only owner who could produce the most with the least money. ATV created most TV dramas and nurtured most talent at that time."

ATV was the place where the "Lion Rock Spirit" was truly realised as the station allowed staff a free hand to flex their artistic muscles - if they could handle the workload. "As long as you worked hard, you would have good returns," Paw says.

Staff enjoyed working at ATV despite the punishing routine.

"Three people might take up the workload of six … Staff might earn three months' money by working one month of overtime."

The great heyday of drama production was the 1980s, and Paw began to make a name in the classic ATV drama Fatherland in 1980 and many more later, mostly playing caring mothers.

In real life, Paw is also a mother who places family above all else. When she was invited to join TVB in the '80s, Paw chose to stay at ATV as she could spend more time taking care of her only daughter, who was born in 1982. As Paw was mostly hosting women's infotainment shows at the time, the regular work schedule - 10am to 4pm, Monday to Friday - gave her sufficient space to take care of the family.

She attributes her family values to her parents. These values also extended to the strong bonding at ATV.

In the late '80s when late Lai Sun Group founder Lim Por-yen took over the station, numerous producers and artists switched to TVB. Paw once considered following a senior producer and jumping ship.

"But I love ATV too much … Senior management changed but frontline staff were still the same. I was too fond of the brotherhood and sisterhood," she laughs.

Lau Shek-yin, another ATV icon, describes Paw as a compassionate lady in both family and work.

"As both of us lived on Hong Kong Island, she always offered me a ride after work," says Lau, who began working with Paw on a cooking show in the early '90s.

Deeply influenced by her late father, Paw learned to be a modest actress by not putting wealth first. "My mother often told me if Father worked for somewhere else with better pay, our family would surely be torn apart."

Paw's father's teaching, and her childhood environment, allowed Paw to expertly play the roles of grass-roots women. She remembers what it was like as a child - six people, her parents, grandmother, elder sister and younger brother, crammed in a tiny flat in Kowloon City.

"I had to go to the market to buy food, cook and wash clothes … Even now I still enjoy washing dishes and don't let my domestic workers do it."

It is that down-to-earth and approachable image she often portrayed as a poor mother in so many television dramas and films that appeals to audiences.

"Please do not ask me to act like the rich; I'm not able to handle it. People whose noses are always high cannot understand the feelings of the suppressed people."

Her sympathy for the underprivileged finally paid off when her role as a grass-roots widow in The Way We Are earned her four best actress awards in different film contests, including the Hong Kong Film Awards in 2009.

The film portrayed the self-help spirit that bound ordinary residents in Tin Shui Wai, the border town known as the city of sadness because of its many cases of domestic violence and tragedies.

Paw may have won plenty of plaudits for her work, but the trophies at her home have not made her complacent. "I just put them aside and don't look at them … Who cares how many awards you have after all?"

Even now, she still strives to polish her already sophisticated acting skills by reading novels and watching movies. But the only thing she cares about at the moment, she says, is how the fate of the hundreds of ATV employees will unfold.

Singer, Jinny Ng's (吳若希) mother fell into a coma and warded into ICU due to a bike accident earlier. Yesterday, Jinny and her brother went to the hospital to visit their mother with the accompany of her good friend, Kellyjackie as well. At 7.20pm, Jinny walked out from the ward and expressed there was great improvements in her mother's condition: "She could open her eyes widely now and look at everybody. She could make simple hand movements and had reactions when we talked to her. Many problems can be solved once she regains consciousness." Jinny continued: "My mother's left eye was hurt and I told her to open her left eye wide. But still have to wait and see if there is additional initial developments in order to check her eyes' condition. (Very emotional when she managed to open her eyes widely?) Yes as I talk to her everyday and it does help. I also read out the message written by others and Sisley Choi said she planned to treat my mum to 'yam cha'. My mum started to laugh upon hearing that and there is great improvements."

Possibility to leave ICU

When asked if she could see the doctor today, Jinny replied nope: "But the nurse mentioned there was a possibility to remove the throat breathing equipment if my mother showed reaction. Since my mother regained consciousness, minor surgery was not required. (When can she leave ICU?) No idea and have to see the doctor first. But she should be able to leave ICU ward after a few days provided the throat breathing equipment was removed and in stable condition. However, the level of her regaining consciousness was around 3 to 4 and only allowed to leave if reached level 5 and able to breathe without any equipments. (Did she try to speak?) Her mouth had the throat breathing equipment and I stopped her from removing it.'

Admired her younger brother was strong

Jinny praised her brother was strong: "I asked him about his plans if our mother failed to wake up and he replied he had no idea but will do his part well. Hence, I appreciate him. (Are you able to stay strong?) I try my best to keep my body healthy." When asked if she planned to transfer her mother to another hospital to ease convenience, Jinny responded nope: "The brain department here is better and service is very good as well." She added that her mood was bad for the past two days and explained: "The isolated bed ward and my mother were admitted on the same day and I felt envy of them upon seeing their speedy recovery.

The Chief Executive in Council has refused to renew the license for the troubled broadcaster when it expires on November 30 this year, putting a final nail in the coffin for Hong Kong's oldest broadcaster.

The government yesterday notified ATV that it will be given until April 1, 2016, to operate with its spectrum revoked on the same date. Up to 700 employees will be made redundant.
The decision on the fate of the 58-year-old station came amid a 24-hour rollercoaster ride, with ATV announcing on air on Tuesday night that it had secured a "white knight" investor in HKTV's Ricky Wong Wai-kay. But Wong denied yesterday there was any such deal. Then came news yesterday morning of another mystery investor signing a deal with major ATV shareholder Wong Ching. But this investor is unlikely to push through with the transaction as the memorandum of agreement hinged on an ATV license renewal.

Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Gregory So Kam- leung said Exco had "considered all relevant developments and facts, including the news bulletin by ATV last night and the clarification from HKTV." He revealed that eight minutes past midnight yesterday he received a letter that "a few people had an indicative offer for ATV but there was no mention of a deal." He said the non-renewal decision was "well-deliberated" and that ATV was given enough time to submit its restructuring plan by Tuesday's deadline.

Accountancy firm Deloitte was appointed by the courts to oversee the station. In November, ATV requested leeway until the end of last month to give it time to develop a restructuring plan. On January 2, Deloitte asked the Executive Council not to make a final decision because of the ongoing restructuring. After seeking legal advice, the government gave ATV until March 31 to make its proposals. "By the deadline, no specific proposals were made by ATV on restructuring," So said. "The CE in Council also considered the request in the submission for the extension of the deadline and the information made available this afternoon, but was not satisfied that a sufficient case has been put forward to justify any further extension of time."

It is the first time in broadcasting history that an existing license was not renewed. So and Communications Authority head Ambrose Ho Pui-him warned that if ATV committed another serious breach of the law within the next 12 months, its license will be revoked immediately. The government will set up a task force to ensure the speedy resolution of various issues and to minimize any adverse impact of the non-renewal decision. The government has invited RTHK to provide an analogue TV service channel to give audiences one more choice from April 1 next year up to 2020. "For the spare spectrum, we will look at the entire situation and work according to Broadcasting Ordinance and spectrum policies to decide how to allocate them," So said. "Currently we cannot tell how we are going to arrange it." So said if ATV closes down before the scheduled timetable, RTHK will take over the service.

Calling yesterday "the darkest day in Hong Kong," ATV's major investor Wong Ching said he was not surprised by the license renewal failure. He attributed it to "a series of conspiracy and deception regarding the sale of the shares of ATV in these two years." He added it was "the price paid by a conscientious media station."
