The 44-year-old adopted baby Xavier in Jiangsu, China in July and she is currently in the midst of applying American citizenship for the baby.
When interviewed, Irene admitted that her decision to have a child came too late.
"I used to have a fear of pregnancy after seeing so many friends get married, have a child but ended up in divorce. And now that I've finally decided to have a kid, my age and body doesn't allow me to."
She revealed that the idea of adopting came to her when she saw two of her friends doing the same thing and they appeared very happy.
"I received the relevant information and photos in May. When I saw my baby in the photo, I liked him already and I felt an affinity between us."
Xavier was a sickly child when Irene first took him home, so the star got her first test of motherhood as she tried to nurse him back to health.
"At first he was coughing rather badly and it broke my heart to see that."
"But now he's doing well and even gained weight."
Irene revealed that she has also been planning baby Xavier's future.
"I hope he will study in Hong Kong until he is around 13 years old before we send him to the States.
"He is just learning how to talk because no one was around to teach him before. Although he is starting out late in learning, all I'm really asking of him is to grow up a healthy and strong boy."
